"Bulldozing Stirling Hwy homes will transform the area: Premier"

Hi Followers

I was sent this article that I thought I'd share:

The suburban strip along the Stirling Highway would be transformed with multi-dwelling residences and commercial strips as the government accrued 25 hectares of private land backing the road, Premier Colin Barnett has said.

Scores of homes from North Fremantle to Nedlands - including that of Mr Barnett himself - will need to be knocked down to allow a proposed widening of the road reserve in a bid to ease congestion that is expected to worsen as the city grows.

While no additional lanes would be added, the works include cycle, bus priority and right-hand turning lanes.

Mr Barnett said he would not intervene to save his Claremont home from being resumed but said the project would occur over 20 years, limiting the need for forced acquisitions.

Properties would be purchased as they became available for sale over the next two decades.

"If someone sells their house and it's purchased for long-term improvements - maybe 20 years away - to Stirling Highway, that house or property will have [the portion needed for the road reserve] taken off the title," Mr Barnett said.

"It will probably then be resold and you'll see ... [it] redeveloped as modern apartments, maybe commercial [space].

"So, gradually you'll see a transformation as the reserve is expanded and houses will be redeveloped ... you'll actually see a lot of rebuilding, albeit it further back from the Stirling Highway.

"You won't see a suburban wasteland."

The residences would likely be two or three storeys high, adding density to the wealthy suburbs.
Mr Barnett said his wife Lyn joked to him that at least they had a guaranteed buyer.

"To have a better operating Stirling Highway is something that everybody wants," he said.
Opponents of the widening plan claim historical buildings including the Claremont War Memorial would need to be removed.
